Jackson County legislators made history Monday by electing women to lead them for the first time.
They made Legislator Crystal Williams, 2nd district at large, the chair, and Legislator Theresa Galvin of the 6th district the vice chair.
That is a first for an elected chair and first for an all women chair and vice chair, officials said.
Within minutes of the action on Williams, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker put out a media release calling her, “a true trailblazer and a passionate advocate for women and all persons in need.”
Williams is an original, Peters Baker said, and “The county will be well served with her as chair.”
Williams, first elected in 2010, has chaired the Budget, Health and Environment and Intergovernmental committees.
Galvin, who finished her first year in office at the end of last year, serves as chair of the Inter-Governmental Affairs Committee and is a member of the anti-drug, land use and public works committees.
Williams and Galvin said they look forward to working with their colleagues and the next county executive.
