The city council on Thursday approved a community improvement district for the Whole Foods project.
The 30-year CID a one-cent sales tax in the project area provides funding for needed public improvements, like streetscape and sewer work.
The 45.000 square feet grocery store is part of a mixed use project on about 2.8 acres south of 51st Street between Oak Street and Brookside Boulevard.
The six-story building will include 170 multi-family apartments, parking for 445 vehicles and a UMKC student health center.
Negotiations with neighbors took about three years but ended with strong community support.
The project will displace the Young Matrons clubhouse but the small 1930s-era building will be moved to 52nd and Cherry streets.
