They had very different approaches to civil rights, and it would have been a good debate if Dr. Martin Luther King had met Malcolm X just before Malcolm’s assassination.
That’s the scenario of The Meeting, a Westport Center for the Arts presentation on Saturday, January 26 at the Black Archives of Mid-America.
Kansas City actors Walter Coppage and Tosin Morohunfola adopt the roles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X in an imagined meeting of the two civil rights leaders. Set shortly before Malcolm X’s assassination, the two men discuss and debate their respective approaches in the civil rights movement.
The Meeting is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc., New York.

Walter Coppage has performed major roles in many Kansas City theaters. He’s also appeared in numerous national radio and television commercials, and has served for a number of years as the spokesperson for Children International. Walter is active in the growing Kansas City film industry, performing in a number of feature films, TV movies, independent films and industrials. His most recent roles include Bob Crachitt in A Christmas Carol at the Kansas City Repertory Theater and in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter at the Steppenwolfe Theatre in Chicago.
Tosin Morohunfola is the co-founder and former artistic director of the Multicultural Theatre Initiative. As an actor, he has performed roles at the Unicorn, Creede Repertory Theater in Creede Colorado, and the Coterie. He is a member of Those People and Stitchtactics Improv and has starred in the short films As a Puzzle, Alpha Bravo Charlie, and A. Masterson.
