We went to city hall to keep an eye on Midtown issues for you. Among the stories we reported: the council decided delaying the streetcars over a contract controversy would be risky; the charter commission suggested adding back a previously-removed requirement for a contingency fund; and KCI will cost millions whether it is replaced or not replace.
The Old Hyde Park neighborhood continued rallying to keep several buildings on Armour Bouelvard from demolition, even as MAC Property, the developer, unveiled new drawings for the apartments they hope to build in their place. The mayor invited neighborhoods and residents to showcase their “big ideas.” The neighborhood advisory council also announced a candidate forum to precede its annual election.
Midtown small businesses and entrepreneurs got a boost when a new business incubator opened at 50th and Prospect. The Urban Neighborhood Initiative also invited folks to an urban hiring fair on Sept. 17.
Opportunities to study wildlife in the city continued at the Discovery Center, with a chance to learn about Monarch butterflies, and workshops on birds, bugs and salamanders.
On the education front, a citywide committee proposed year-round pre-school to help prepare youngster for success in kindergarten and beyond.
