Westport play reading looks at art in the Great Recession

The recession has led to bad times, and to good times, according to the author of a new play being read in Westport.

Westport Center for the Arts will present “Goat Song,” a staged reading of an original play by Rev. Scott Myers at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Buffalo Room, 817 Westport Road, on the south side of the Westport Flea Market.

“Goat Song” follows a group of newly down-on-their-luck musicians who attempt to transcend their misfortune through their art and the support and love of their fellow artists at the painful beginning of the Great Recession, according to the center.

“My play is not only a look at the painful upheaval many people experienced at the beginning of the Great Recession, but also a celebration of how community and the act of creating art help us cope,” Myer said.

The play is directed by Jordan Fox and stars Fox, Granville O’Neal, Devon Barnes, Coleman Crenshaw, Tim Burks, Jerron O’Neal and Teal Holiday.

Myers has written four plays, including “Goat Song.” In 2013, Westport Center for the Arts and MeltingPotKC Theater Company produced “JFK: A Ghostly Evening.”

Westport Center for the Arts was founded in 2006 to support community artists and the arts. In addition to the monthly Brown Bag Concerts, WCA presents Readers’ Theater, Kids Team Up for Art and other special programs.
