Westport High sale may be reconsidered May 28

revote-on-westport-high-schoolThe Kansas City Public Schools repurposing office has offered an update on when additional discussion about the sale of Westport High School may occur.

The school board is now expected to take up the sale again at its May 28 board meeting.

The board discussed the sale to Foutch Brothers, a developer who had plans to include a charter high school run by Academie Lafayette in its redevelopment, last month. It was then reported on Internet sites and in the media that the board had taken a final vote to reject the offer.

Community members have since been urging the board to reconsider its vote, and meantime, several new school board members were elected on April 10.

“The administration and school board chair need time to properly brief the new board members on the repurposing process in general, as well as on the specifics of the sale of Westport High School prior to a board vote,” the repurposing office said in an email. “As such, we are postponing board discussion of the sale of Westport High and are working towards a board vote at the May 28 board meeting. When that date has been finalized, staff will provide an update via email and on the repurposing website. We appreciate your patience.”
