The city is inviting the public to submit ideas for naming the East Patrol Division Police Station.
Members of the city council and other staff members will listen to ideas at a public hearing on Monday Oct. 6.
Some have suggested naming it after Leon Jordan, a Kansas City political leader and former police officer who was shot in 1970. The Kansas City Star, in a recent editorial, says honoring Jordan is a worthy cause, but could set off a push to rename other stations.
Right now, the name of the campus is simply “the East Patrol Division Station and Crime Lab Campus.” Residents can suggest a name for part or all of the campus currently under construction at 27th and Prospect.
“This hearing will begin a public process to examine whether a name should be attached to the campus, as well as who could be honored and why. If a name is given to the facility, it would mark the first time any KCMO police station is named in honor of an individual,” according to the city.
It is scheduled to open in early 2016.
