Union Cemetery receives national designation

Union Cemetery, the final resting place for many of Kansas City, Westport, and Midtown’s pioneers, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places

Kansas City’s oldest public cemetery is maintained by the Union Cemetery Historical Society. The cemetery is in the historic Union Hill neighborhood, established in 1857 and one of the oldest neighborhoods in Midtown.

As the Union Hill area has been redeveloped, several residential apartments have been named after the pioneers buried in Union Cemetery, including Michael Diveley, George Caleb Bingham, John Calvin McCoy, John Campbell, Jacob Ragan, Allan B.H. McGee, Dr. Johnston Lynkins, Martha “Mattie” Lynkins Bingham, Hattie Drisdom Kearney, James M. Hunter, Milton J. Payne, John Taylor, Patti Moore, Tillman Crabtree and M.C. Wood.
