Speaker to address impact of artists on community development

Arlene Goldband, known for her studies of how communities develop themselves and affect social change through the creative arts, is coming to speak at UMKC. Her talk is part of an ongoing series of events focused on urban planning to promote cultural development and the arts.

UMKC says Goldbard’s presentation, “Imagination, Empathy, Creativity: Planning for a Culture of Possibility,” is sponsored by the university’s Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design.

Goldbard is the author of several books, including The Culture of Possibility: Art, Artists and The Future. This series coincides with a grant from the Kauffman Foundation to Prof. Michael Frisch to update his work on the Status of Artists in Kansas City. The update of this study will facilitate an analysis of the impact of the development of InterUrban ArtHouse, a community artist space.

The event is free and open to the public, and is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in Room 101 of Katz Hall, 5005 Rockhill Road. The lecture is supported by the Bernardin Haskell Fund of the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences, and co-sponsored by InterUrban ArtHouse of Overland Park, Kan.
