Show off your knowledge of Midtown: enter our fountain contest

Do you know where this Midtown fountain is? The first person to correctly identify the address of the fountain will win a prize, and the respect of all of our readers.

Today the Midtown KC Post starts a weekly contest that runs until May 8 and puts attention on Kansas City’s fountains.

About half of the city’s 48 fountains need work and eight need urgent or extensive repairs.

The Seville Light fountain at 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway is the only one that does not function at all. It will take about a half million dollars to fix, while the city manager’s budget recommends only $250,000 for repair of all the fountains.

So the City of Fountains Foundation is mounting its first fund raising campaign for multiple fountains, which include the Seville and the seven others in most need.  The foundation will start with a major fundraiser on June 9 at Union Station, which will also allow people and businesses to adopt fountains for care.

The hope is our contest will raise awareness of the legacy of fountains in Kansas City before that and maybe help with fundraising.

It works like this:

On each Wednesday starting today, a picture of a section of one of about 30 fountains in Midtown will be posted. The first person to email mjdraper@midtownkcpost.com with the fountain address will win two tickets to the Jiggle Jam Family Music Festival over Memorial Day weekend, which unfolds around the fountain at Crown Center.

The contest winner will be announced each Monday, along with a story on the history of that fountain. Include your address on the email so we can mail you the tickets, courtesy of the City of Fountains Foundation.

The foundation hopes to raise $2.7 million for repairs to the Seville and following fountains:

  • The J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain, 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway.
  • The Volker Fountain, along Brush Creek and Volker Boulevard from Oak Street to Rockhill Road.
  • The Spirit of Freedom Fountain, 4700 Cleveland Avenue.
  • The Westside Fountain, Southwest Boulevard and Summit Street.
  • The Delbert J. Haff Memorial Fountain at Meyer Boulevard and Swope Parkway
  • The Sea Horse Fountain at Meyer Circle and Ward Parkway
  • The Children’s Fountain at North Oak Parkway and Northeast 32nd Street.
