Some of the issues the community will discuss as part of the Kansas City Public Schools facilities master planning process.
Midtown parents and residents have a chance to get involved in a discussion about school attendance boundaries and the best use its Kansas City Public School buildings in the future.
This month, KCPS will launch the Facilities Master Plan effort to develop a blueprint and continue its push to more efficiently use the resources provided by taxpayers and patrons, according to a press release. During the next five months, KCPS will work directly with a cadre of parents, families, community members and a plethora of experts to reset some attendance boundaries and to review its current configuration.
After several public meetings, community members will make a recommendation to Superintendent R. Stephen Green on what changes they think should be made be made to support student achievement. The process is scheduled to be complete in late February 2014.
The Facilities Master Plan effort, formally announced during the Dr. Green’s State of the Schools Address, is designed to help KCPS better adapt to a number of upcoming challenges, including:
- The opening of two middle schools for the 2014-2015 school year.
- The planned opening of two early learning centers by 2015.
- Enrollment growth and reductions in various regions of KCPS.
- Targeted maintenance and upgrades/improvements at several schools.
Several public meetings will be planned over the next 60 to 90 days to receive the direct community input needed to make an informed recommendation. Immediate upcoming meetings include:
- Tuesday, Oct. 15 – 5:30 p.m. at Paseo Academy, 4747 Flora, Kansas City, Mo.
- Thursday, Oct. 24 – 5:30 p.m. at Manual Career and Technical Center, 1215 E. Truman Road, Kansas City, Mo.
