The school district says the sale of Westport Middle School is complete.
“The district closed yesterday on the sale of Westport Middle to Kansas City Sustainable Development Partners for reuse as a mixed-use development. KCSDP is a locally based development company and proposes the historic conversion of the school building, which will include up 100 market-rate apartments, as well as commercial space which will be primarily targeted to non-profit office use. Grounds will be used for urban farming/gardening to promote healthy living,” the district said in a press release.
When the developers presented their proposal at a public meeting last August, they said middle school would house local nonprofits, some of whom have already agreed to move or are considering the relocation. The developers also said they had an agreement with Cultivate KC to build an urban agricultural center on the middle school site, including community gardens and orchards and space for conducting training in urban agriculture.
The developers have agreed to host two public meetings in coordination with the Southmoreland, Old Hyde Park and Hyde Park neighborhoods before any rezoning or special use permit hearings.
