Over at the Kansas City public library site, there’s an interesting history of the founding of the Jones Store, once a prominent downtown and Midtown institution.
It traces the store’s early days, when “groceries could be purchased under the same roof as stoves, hardware, blankets, home furnishings, fabrics, shoes, fine china, and various other products.”
The Jones Store originally sold merchandise it bought from liquidated businesses. It used “relentless” advertising and offered such services as a café and even a bank in its downtown location.
