Police look back with historic badges

police-badgeAbout 400 police officers are going retro this year – wearing replicas of old badges – to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the Kansas City Police Department.

They are wearing copies of 1923 badges in homage to the past and as a fundraiser for the police historical society.

The badges sold for up to $90 and were made available to all ranks of the department.

Historical society members will show off the throwback badges at 10 a.m. Monday at the headquarters annex, 901 Charlotte St.

The 1923 badges were chosen because they are the next in a series, police said.

The original old west, six-pointed star badges were used as a fundraiser in 2000. The next badge, called the folded star was issued in the early 1900s and was used in 2008 for the department’s 135th anniversary.

And the 1923 badges were the next in the series.
