Plein air painting fest coming to Penn Valley Park

Plain air in Penn Valley ParkPainting is not always considered a spectator sport, but it will be this May when a new event launches in Penn Valley Park.

The Plein Air Fest will be a painting competition held May 7-10.  According to the Penn Valley Park Conservancy, the sponsor of the event, a plein air competition challenges artists to work fast, channeling a quickly changing environment onto paper or canvas.

The Penn Valley event includes a quick paint – a timed art competition. Artists complete an entire painting within a specified amount of time and in a designated location.

The festival is attracting artists from across the region
to try their hands at capturing  the park in plein air
while competing for $4,000 in prize money. The competition will conclude with a ticketed reception and auction to award prizes and offer the art for sale.

Artists can also sign up for a three-day workshop led by
renowned plein air artist Phil Starke. And there’s a reception and preview party on May 10 to showcase the art, award prizes, and offer the art for sale. After that reception an exhibit of the artwork will be held at Buttonwood Art Space, 3013 Main Street, until July 25.
