Plaza Lights ceremony moves to new location

This map shows the best parking and viewing areas for the Plaza lighting ceremony tomorrow. The festivities have been moved to a new location this year, Nichols Road and Pennsylvania near Brio Tuscan Grille and Burberry. The new location allows more people to view the ceremony.

Thursday at 6:50 p.m., a flip of a single switch will  turn on the Plaza Lights.

It’s the 83rd year of Plaza lighting ceremonies.  The tradition began, according to the Plaza website, in 1925, when the head of Nichols Company maintenance strung 16 lights over a doorway of the first Plaza building. As more buildings were added, so were more lights.

When the Plaza Theater was built in 1928, that same fellow  ran lights across 47th Street to reach the theater, and then began outlining the towers with lights.

The first lighting ceremony began five years later.

This year, the pre-show begins at 5.
