Planning a parade: Woody’s Classic Sports Bar ready for brisk business

woody'sThings are brisk along the St. Patrick’s Day parade route, so businesses adapt.

Woody’s Classic Sports Bar, 3740 Broadway, will open at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday and close at about 6 p.m.

That’s opposite hours, said manager Michelle Wyssmann, since they would normally open at 4 p.m. and close at 1:30 a.m.

She also will be stocked up on plastic cups and the essentials: Jameson Irish whiskey, Baileys Irish Cream and Guinness beer.

People arrive in the early morning to stake out places along Broadway for the parade that begins at 11 a.m. and ends by 2 or so.

Woody’s has a capacity of 150 and people will run in, have a shot or two or a beer and run back out, Wyssmann said.

“It’s an interesting day,” she said, “a lot of chaos.”

The plastic cups are because there is not time to wash glasses, she said.

Her staff will also serve many appetizers that people can eat quickly or take with them.

She does not do green beer, she said, because of the hassle of putting food coloring in it during the parade rush.

After the parade ends, she said, people tend to go home or to other areas like Westport to drink.

So she and her staff will run until about 2 p.m. and close by about 6, she said.

The next day everything returns to normal, until next year’s parade.
