The Penn Valley Park Conservancy is hoping to lure visitors to the park this weekend for its second Plein Air festival and a Friday night concert.

Both are part of the conservancy’s long-term plan to restore and enhance the park and get people out to use it.

The plein air painting competition started yesterday and continues through Saturday.

Artists will be painting throughout the park during the festival. The festival draws artists from across the region to paint the park “en plain air,” which requires them to work quickly in changing conditions to capture the park in paint.

For those wanting to watch the painters, organizer Kirk Peterson says the three “quick paints,” timed events where all artists focus on the same subject, may be the best opportunity.

“That is the best way to see the artists at work in a concentrated space and marvel at their creations while getting to see many different perspectives of a similar subject matter,” he said.

Quick paint times and locations

  • May 14, 5-7 p.m. Just Off Broadway Theater, 3014 Central
  • May 15, 5-7 p.m. Liberty Memorial
  • May 16 7-9 a.m. Lake Valley.

This year, the conservancy has added another element to the Plein Air Festl – an evening concert on Friday at 7 p.m. featuring Katy Guillen & the Girls.

“The sunsets in Penn Valley Park are wonderful,” Dona Boley, a conservancy board membes, says. Boley has written about the history of Kansas City parks and boulevards, and she says historically the parks were popular places for concerts. The conservancy is hoping to revive that tradition with this event.
