Nelson starts new Third Thursday event

third thursdayThe Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is launching Third Thursdays beginning this week on Nov. 20.

The evenings will include live music, art activities and free programs with a different theme each month. The inaugural evening, Crafting KC, spotlights local craft beer from the Crane Brewing Company, and fair-trade coffee from Quay Coffee.

“Third Thursday is an amazing opportunity for the museum to connect audiences with local community artists, musicians and businesses in a very impactful way,” said Kreshaun McKinney, Educator at the Nelson-Atkins. “My colleagues and I really enjoy building partnerships and collaborations that allow us to attract a new adult audience through the power of art and the tremendous talents of Kansas City.”

Local indie rock band Not A Planet will perform in Bloch Lobby (schedule below). DJ Miscela will also be on hand to spin sounds with a retro, Afro-funk vibe.

An art activity with local artist Tara Tonsor will allow participants to put their stamp on their own 2015 Third Thursday calendar. Conservator Paul Benson will give a talk on the techniques used to date artifacts.

December’s Third Thursday theme is Rad Tidings, and will feature live music, a hot chocolate bar, last-minute gifts for purchase and a fruitcake toss.
