Musical porch festival, big in other cities, planned for West Plaza

porchfestPorchfest, a community music event that’s gaining popularity across the country, is coming to Midtown.

In fact, its coming to the West Plaza neighborhood this June.

“Porchfest KC is up and rolling and taking applications right now,” organizer Kathryn Golden, a recent transplant from California, said last night at the West Plaza Neighborhood Association meeting.

Golden has been to similar events in other cities and thinks her new neighborhood would be a perfect venue for a Porchfest. She envisions people strolling or riding bikes through the neighborhood and being able to stop at various houses to listen to jazz, bluegrass, classical and other forms of music.

A dozen cities across the country have started Porchfests, which Golden says are always centered in older or historic neighborhoods, typically in the urban core, as a way to bring attention to the neighborhood, to build community, and to highlight the talents of the city.

Bands will play for an hour or more at each location and then different bands will come to that location as participants move from house to house. There will be a tip jar at each location to pay the bands, and Golden hopes to get sponsorships to provide additional help in that area.

“If you have a band, and are interested in playing — we want to hear from you. If you have a porch in need of a band — we want to hear from you. If you wish to Adopt-a-Porch, or sponsor the event in some way — we want to hear from you.  If you have a food truck — we want to hear from you. If you want to volunteer — we want to hear from you,” Golden says.

  3. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off
the screen in Safari. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with internet browser
compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design look great though!
Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Many thanks
