Murderer takes plea deal

johnsonA Jackson County judge has sentenced a man to 15 years for shooting a woman to death after she left Starlight Theater.

Calah Johnson, 35, pleaded guilty yesterday rather than start trial. Prosecutors agreed to the plea deal after consulting with the victim’s family, they said.

He shot Deanna Lieber,45, who lived near Lawrence, as she left Starlight with her family.

On July 17, 2009, a red light camera recorded the shooting into her vehicle near 59th Street and Bruce Watkins Drive.

According to court records, detectives tracked down the owners of two vehicles seen there, and one said Johnson borrowed the car that night.

A witness also said Johnson had told him he fired the shots.
