St. Louis city on Wednesday began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples but Jackson County judges are awaiting a ruling in a local federal case.
The St. Louis action came after a St. Louis state judge ruled that Missouri’s 2004 constitutional amendment banning gay marriage was unconstitutional.
In Jackson County, judges are awaiting a ruling in a case that is before the federal court in Kansas City, Jackson County Counselor Stephen Nixon said in a press release.
“We are looking forward to that guidance and will implement the directive of the court promptly,” he said.
Many other counties in Missouri are also waiting for other court rulings.
