Midtown seniors, others can get free tax help

AARP is offering tax counseling, return preparation and electronic filing – for free –to Midtown seniors and taxpayers earning less than $60,000.

The tax services are available at the Salvation Army–Westport Temple, 500 W 39th Street on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and noon from February 5 through April 10, 2013. Taxpayers can stop by the Salvation Army between 9 a.m. and noon or 1 to 4 p.m. or call 816.753.6040 to check on their eligibility and make an appointment.

The AARP  Tax-Aide volunteers are trained through the IRS’s Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program.

Assistance will be provided for all 2012 tax forms, including US, Missouri, and Kansas income tax returns and Kansas City earnings tax.  Requests for Missouri rent and property tax rebates may also be filed electronically.  It will also be possible, in March and April, to complete income tax forms and rent or property tax rebates for the preceding three years.
