The Center City neighborhood (from Linwood to Armour, Paseo to Troost) received a green award from Councilwoman Melba Curls. It was honored for energy efficiency programs, food and rain gardens and a large community orchard.
Kansas City on Thursday gave KC Green awards to two neighborhoods in Midtown.
City Council woman Melba Curls presented the awards to the Center City and Ivanhoe neighborhoods at the KC Green Fair held downtown in Ilus Davis Park.
Center City got it for devising a plan for energy efficiency for new homes and energy audits to improve older structures. They were also cited for putting in food gardens, a rain garden and a large community orchard.
Ivanhoe was recognized for its Grown in Ivanhoe project that includes a farmers market and home farmstands and for its Lots of Love program, which reuses vacant lots for edible landscapes, play activities and community gathering spots.
The Pendleton Heights and Avalon View neighborhoods also got the awards for projects done in their areas.
Those are the first four winners of the new KC Green Neighborhood Recognition program, the city said in a press release.
“These neighborhoods incorporated a variety of green practices that not only improved their local communities, but benefit the City as a whole,” said Environmental Manager Andy Savastino.
Pendleton Heights and Avalon View neighborhoods also received awards.
