Mayor James in inviting residents of Kansas City to participate in a discussion Feb. 25 on race, immigration and the American dream
The discussion is part of a multimedia initiative tackling those issues called Your Fellow Americans, co-produced by KCPT’s Hale Center for Journalism and Brainroot Light & Sound, a Kansas City-based video production company.
Generally, the series consists of weekly short interviews with families telling their stories about their experiences as citizens, meant to provoke conversations online and face to face.
This week’s episode is different: a live discussion at the Gem Theater with panelists including: James; Cielo Fernandez, chief program officer at El Centro, Inc. in Kansas City, KS; Michelle T. Johnson, columnist for the Kansas City Star; Paul Gutiérrez, a community outreach advocate/coordinator in Kansas City, MO; and Dr. Sofia Khan, MD, founder of the Kansas City chapter of Muslim Youth of North America. The 90-minute discussion will be moderated by KCPT’s Nick Haines, host of “Kansas City Week in Review,” and will conclude with an audience Q&A.
“I hope we have a full house at the Gem Theater, because the issues that are on the table are important to everyone who, like me, loves Kansas City and wants to make it better than it is,” James said.
