Jackson County prosecutors on Monday announced a first-degree murder charge against a Kansas City man for killing a man outside a bar on Troost.
Ray A. Johnson, 37, is also charged with armed criminal action in the April 23 shooting death of Derrick Wren at 5709 Troost Avenue.
According to court records:
Police found the victim shot multiple times on a curb and he soon died at a hospital.
Surveillance footage from the bar showed two men following Wren when he left the bar, with one of them wearing red framed glasses and a distinct striped jersey.
A witness outside said the victim and the man in the jersey fought, and the killer pulled out a gun and fired repeatedly, even after Wren was on the ground.
It happened after the victim screamed, “No, no, don’t do it,” a witness said.
Police found the eyeglasses at the scene, with one lens out of the frame.
Johnson was identified through social media. When arrested, he had a black eye and told police he had recently purchased new glasses.
