Man charged in Midtown street robberies

simsA Kansas City man has been charged in connection with a series of Midtown armed robberies, Jackson County prosecutors announced today.

Derrick M. Sims, 27, faces charges of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.

His arrest comes after reports of several Wednesday evening armed street robberies in the area from 41st to 43rd streets, Main to Oak streets.

From court records:

In one robbery, police found a victim bleeding from the head on the 4100 block of Warwick.

He told them a suspect got out of “an old beat up” Ford Cougar, told him to “give him everything,” and beat his head with a gun.

They fought for the gun and the victim was able to get it away, but the clip fell out during the struggle.

The man later identified as Sims yelled to those in the Ford to shoot the victim, who then took off running.

Police found Sims, covered with blood, walking near the scene of another robbery. They searched him and found a wallet that belonged to a victim, an iPhone and $969 in cash.
