Man charged in domestic violence murder

A Kansas City man is charged with the beating death of his girlfriend, Jackson County prosecutor announced Wednesday.

Morris L. Smith, 45, is charged with first-degree murder in the Tuesday death of Kimberly D. Hetzler, 36.

She was found dead on her bed in her apartment in the 1200 block of East 37th Street.

According to court records:

Police found her after Smith, who sometimes lived there in what he said was a violent relationship, called 911.

Smith said he had been drinking and smoking crack cocaine before he went there and the two argued. He said the victim was pregnant and he was the father.

He had blood on striped pajama pants that he wore under his jeans.

He told police, “I’m going to jail for the rest of my life. …My mom and dad are going to kill me. This is going to kill my uncle.”

Finally, he told the detective, “I know you know I did it.”
