Officials revealed plans for the Linwood shopping center last May.

The city council is expected today to give final approval for city purchase of the Linwood Shopping Center, the beginning of its redevelopment.

The council plans and zoning committee on Wednesday voted to recommend the measure and advanced it to the full council.

The $950,000 purchase is the first step in a complex financial package and tax breaks for the $12 million project.

It is to include a Sun Fresh grocery of 38,000 square feet and a makeover for surrounding shops.

Councilman Jermaine Reed said the purchase is an early Christmas present for “folks in the heart of the third district.”

The once popular shopping center has declined over the years as redevelopment efforts failed. City officials say its revival meshes with a range of development efforts along Troost or east of it.

Councilman Quinton Lucas said, “This will be a shopping center that has a good amount of … local impact, a jewel in the heart of the third district.”
