KC man, 63 years old, robs with nitro threats, gets prison until about age 80

So much for James T. Smith’s golden years.

A federal judge in Kansas City today sentenced the Kansas City man to 16 years and seven months for robbing a bank and trying to rob a casino.

The prison term for Smith, 63, also included two consecutive years for violating  supervised release for a 1996 bank robbery in Wisconsin.

Also from a media release from federal prosecutors:

Smith was convicted at trial in November, when evidence indicated he used a demand note to steal $1,053 from Commerce Bank, 118 w. 47^th St. on May 18, 2013.

Just after midnight the next morning, he used a demand note and verbal threat in an attempt to rob the Isle of Capri Casino.

In both cases, he threatened to blow up the bank and casino with nitroglycerin.

The judge also ordered Smith to pay $1,053 in restitution.
