Jackson County has opened a new medical examiner’s office in a refurbished warehouse on the Truman Medical Center Campus.

Jackson County now “has a first-rate facility to match its first-rate reputation,” County Executive Mike Sanders said during today’s grand opening of the new office at 950 E. 21st St.

Truman and the county worked together to create new autopsy suites for the medical examiner.

Sanders also pointed to the new facility as another example of regional cooperation.

The medical examiner’s staff serves Jackson, Cass, Clay and Platte counties, as well as handling other cases referred from surrounding counties.

“The opening of this new facility is yet another example of how regional collaboration equals improved public service to our community. I am grateful of the support of all, especially our county legislators, in getting this new facility finished,” Sanders said in a press release following the dedication ceremony.

The Medical Examiner’s Office was formerly housed in what had once been a TMC radiology department. The two organizations have worked together for decades.

The county says Jackson County’s is the only medical examiner’s office in Missouri to earn accreditation from the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME). NAME inspectors found zero deficiencies – on a checklist of more than 350 items – in the county’s office.

“NAME officials repeatedly refer to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office as being a model,” Sanders said, “an office others across the nation should emulate.”
