For many years, Kansas City longed for two stores – Trader Joe’s and IKEA. With the Trader Joe’s now operating on Ward Parkway, the news came today that IKEA is coming as well. But for Midtowners, it will be a bit of a drive. IKEA says it will open its newest store in Merriam, Kansas in the fall of 2014. According to a press release from IKEA, “Located eight miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri, the 349,000-square-foot proposed IKEA store would be built along the eastern side of Interstate-35 at the Johnson Drive exit on 18 acres to be purchased from DDR Corp.” IKEA is the world’s leading home furnishings retailer.
