Hyde Park Children’s Festival provides family-friendly Friday night activities

children's-festivalThe Hyde Park Children’s festival, an annual summer event taking place in the park at 36th and Gillham, was created to offer family-oriented things to do in Midtown. Families can bring a blanket or a lawn chair, and watch a free movie, see a concert and partake of refreshments.

The annual program is put on by the Pilgrim Center in cooperation with the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association and the KCMO Parks and Recreation Department. If you participate in the Thanksgiving Day Pilgrim Run, you’re helping to funding the program as well.

The schedule for this year’s festival is out.he Friday evening events begin June 6 and last through June 27. Here’s the lineup for June 6:

  • Contemporary Rock Concert (7:30 p.m.): Famous Last Words, a local Rock band comprised entirely of middle school-aged musicians, will perform a wide range of contemporary rock songs that young people love.  Thirteen-year-old Elle Myers will wow audience members with her extraordinary vocals.
  • Movie:  Frozen (8:30 p.m.): In this 2013 animated Disney musical, fearless Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to save the Kingdom of Ardendelle from eternal winter.  Many delightful sing-a-long opportunities.  Featuring Indina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff.
  • Special Children’s Activity: Activities by Oddball Kids include making hats with newspaper and bracelets with beads.  An oobleck – a big tub filled with cornstarch and water – will give kids a chance to enjoy some “messy” supervised fun.
  • Refreshments, Prizes and More: There will be free refreshments, including snow cones and other goodies, plus giveaways and drawings for prizes, such as tickets to the zoo or sports events.
