Hazardous waste drop off on Saturday

Get rid of all the accumulated nasty stuff you can’t send to the landfill.

The city is sponsoring an A.B.O.P.T. event on Saturday. That refers to antifreeze, batteries, oil, paint and tires– all things you can drop off.

The event takes place June 1 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Robert J. Mohart Center located at 3200 Wayne.

Here are details from the city:

The City will be on hand to collect and safely dispose of antifreeze; car and household batteries; oil (automotive, cooking, heating, etc.); paint; paint-related chemicals, such as strippers, thinners and varnishes; and tires.

Residents may bring up to three boxes of their unwanted confidential documents to the onsite Media Services Shredding Truck for secure shredding and disposal. Media Services will accept all types of paper, including those with staples, paper clips, spiral notebooks and most office materials.

All materials shredded will be recycled.A leaf and brush dumpster will be onsite for residents to dispose their leaves, yard waste, brush and tree trimmings. All items must be in paper bags, not plastic.

This event is for Kansas City, MO residents only, and participants should bring proof of residency. Space is limited to the first 400 vehicles that arrive. Trash and electronics will not be collected at this event.

This event is sponsored by the City of Kansas City, MO and Heartland Community Connection in partnership with the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, Blue Hills Community Services, Neighborhood Housing Services of Kansas City, Bridging the Gap, Keep Kansas City Beautiful, Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission, Green Impact Zone and Kansas City, MO Police Department.

Residents unable to make this event can attend another A.B.O.P.T. Collection Event on Saturday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at 220 N.W. Metro North Drive (behind the Metro North Mall at the Old Theatre).

Residents may also drop off their household hazardous waste year-round at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 4707 Deramus Ave. This facility is open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments are not required.
