Go see happy Missouri trees change color; Smartphone app will help

fall treesTo see fall tree colors in Missouri, there’s a weekly report and, of course, an app.

The weekly online Missouri Department of Conservation reports come from foresters around the state from late September through November at  mdc.mo.gov/node/4548.

And its free app for smartphones and other mobile items gives up-to-the-minute fall-color scenes from around the state, complete with GPS navigation information, the department reports.

From its press release:

The app “also provides fall-color reports weekly for various areas of the state. Users can even add their own fall-color photos and share them with Facebook friends and others. The MO Fall Color app is active during fall-color changes beginning in September through November. Download MO Fall Color for Android and Apple devices at http://mdc.mo.gov/node/19321.”

Nick Kuhn, forestry field program supervisor, said weather will be the biggest factor in determining fall color, but so far it has been a decent year for most trees.

“Sufficient rain, moderate temperatures, no serious insect problems, or weather events means trees are happy and doing OK,” he said. “The fall weather will be the major factor in showing us those wonderful hidden colors in all trees.”

Watch for sunny days and cool nights with no frost to know when to start looking for color changes, he said, and he predicts the peak time for fall color will be the last week in October.
