The Midtown KC Post is getting ready to publish a book on Midtown Kansas City neighborhood history. And we need your help.

We have done research and gathered a lot of history, but we still need photos of each neighborhood. We need photos of your neighborhood or your house or your relatives who lived in the neighborhood to be considered for inclusion in the book. The older the better, but they must be at least from before the 1990s.

The neighborhoods we are looking for include: Central Hyde Park; North Hyde Park; South Hyde Park; Rockhill; Southmoreland; Roanoke; Valentine; Coleman Highlands; Volker; Plaza/Westport; West Plaza; Heart of Westport; Center City; Squier Park; Manheim Park; South Plaza; Countryside; Crestwood; Sunset Hill; Westwood Park; and Troostwood.

If you have photos you think might work, please let us know. We have a scanner and can come to you or meet you somewhere to get your photos and hear your story.

Please check with older neighbors who have been around for a while and see if they have photos. This is your chance to help us document the history of your part of Midtown!

Please contact Mary Jo Draper at 816-516-2446  or maryjo@drapercom.com. Deadline is September 23rd.

why is it you are only wanting pictures from plaza and mid town ? I have lived in historic northeast since i was five years old ,and can remember at 5 my mother could let me play outside asfter dark where Central bank is on the ave and not be bothered by drug dealers or prostitutes at all. And my aunt was the last owner of the national theater accross from McDonalds .How nmany people remember that????

    • Our book only covers the Midtown area. You are right that there is a lot of interesting history in the northeast and in fact, I understand there is a book about the northeast neighborhoods that will be coming out soon. Overall, it seems that people are taking a greater interest in their neighborhoods, which is really great.
