Free parking coming for some vets

untitled-(3-of-5)Some veterans will soon be able to park for free in metered parking spaces in the city.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee advanced the law change today and sent it to the full council for final approval this afternoon.

It would allow the free parking for veterans with special state license plates issued to former prisoners of war, disabled vets, and those who have received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star or the Purple Heart.

The change will cost little in revenue, said Councilman Scott Taylor, but “the symbolism is very powerful.”

It adds a little to other city efforts to help vets, he said, things that range from loan programs to housing.

Some other cities have enacted such parking laws without any problems, city staff reported.

Councilman Dan Fowler said was obvious the city should to this, and the committee approved it unanimously.
