The latest fountain contest winner is Katharine Fiscus, who gets two tickets to the Jiggle Jam Family Music Festival.
She identified the Diane Sitting fountain at 4720 Jefferson St. inside the entrance to the Seville Parking garage on the Country Club Plaza.
Noted figure sculptor Richard McDermott Miller did the life-size bronze in the 1970s.
Miller’s lifelike nudes are in museum collections nationwide and have been in international exhibits.
He lived in Greenwich Village and died of cancer at age 82 on Dec. 25, 2004. His naturalistic art dated to Greek and Roman traditions and ran against modern tastes for the abstract. He worked with live models in wax and clay and had them cast into bronze, the New York Times reported when he died.
Among many awards he received was one from Classical America that especially honored him for ‘single-minded dedication” to the human figure.
Miller also wrote books on his art and taught sculpture at Queens College, City University of New York, from 1967 to 1992. He served as president of the National Sculpture Society from 1997 to 2000.
From now until May 8, we are running weekly contests intended to call attention to the city’s 48 fountains and give citizens a chance to show their knowledge.
About half the fountains need repair and the City of Fountains Foundation is attempting to raise $2.7 million for repairs to eight of those in the most need.
