The city is going to join others across the world for a symbolic Earth Hour on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Earth Hour is a grassroots movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It started in Syndey, Australia, when people turned off their lights in 2007. It has now grown to more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide. Individuals, communities and businesses turn off non-essential lights for an hour to symbolize support for better environmental practices.
This year, the City of Kansas City will participate and is encouraging other government entities, businesses and residents to do the same.
During Earth Hour, the City says it will turn off all non-essential lighting in City Hall and other facilities to demonstrate its commitment to reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
