Crowdsourcing project helping to fund Académie Lafayette playground

At the Académie Lafayette in Hyde Park, children enjoy the swings on the new school’s playground during breaks from class. Parents are fundraising online in hopes of raising money for additional playground equipment.

Parents and neighbors have worked hard to turn the closed Longan School in Hyde Park into a new branch of the Académie Lafayette. The new school is a French immersion K-2 public charter school open to any child in the Kansas City School District.

But the parents are still working on building and buying playground equipment. In fact, they hope to raise $50,000 to complete the playground. They’ve established an online fundraising site at, which is a civic crowdsourcing platform. That means parents and community members who want to contribute to the playground fund can go to the website and make a contribution. The site has photos of the playground before renovation began and drawings of what the parents hope to accomplish.
