It’s local government week and time to consider enrolling in community engagement university.

City spokesperson Chris Hernandez explained it Thursday at the city council business session, which featured cake and local government updates.

The city, looking for the next group of neighborhood leaders, started its first class weeks ago and about 20 students will graduate soon.

The next free course starts in September and will involve up to 30 people. They will meet once a week for eight weeks, learning the ins and outs of city government.

They begin with things like local government 101 and progress from there, Hernandez said.

Want to get rid of an illegal dump site? Classes range from stuff like that to the intricacies of the city budget.

Those wanting to register for the course – it’s first come, first serve – can go to the city web site.
