City wants art created from city data

Do you see a way to tell the story of life expectancy by zip code in a work of art? The city wants to see your ideas.

Do you see a way to tell the story of life expectancy by zip code in a work of art? The city wants to see your ideas.

The city has a unique offer for local artists who can figure out how to make art out of the city’s data.

That’s right.

“The City of Kansas City, Missouri is calling for local artists to participate in a creative convergence of visual art and the use of data that drives decision-making at City Hall,” the city says in a press release. “As part of this temporary exhibition, titled The Art of Data, Kansas City is seeking conceptual proposals from professional artists or collaborative artist teams to design and create artwork that responds, reflects or reinterprets the City’s performance data.”

The city figures the art works will bring together two of its biggest priorities: promoting the creative economy and showing residents how important data is when deciding how to best use their tax dollars to provide services.

Details
Local artists can submit ideas and apply to participate in the The Art of Data by visiting www.kcmo.gov/artofdata. The selected works will receive a $500 artist stipend, and the artwork will be on display during June 2015 at the ArtsKC gallery space in Kansas City’s Crossroads District.

An artist’s information meeting will be held on February 20, 2015. During the meeting, City staff will provide an overview of the project and details of the city performance data, discuss the selection process and be on hand for questions. For more information on the meeting location, and other deadlines, please visit www.kcmo.gov/artofdata.
