City to host conversation about tech business startups

If you’re a tech startup, the city wants to know how it can make life easier for you.

The city’s Special Committee on Small Business is inviting entrepreneurs, local businesses and interested residents to join a conversation on Kansas City’s technology environment Tuesday, June 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The meeting follows a small business office hours session from 3-5 p.m. for new and potential business owners with questions about starting a business in Kansas City.

“We are taking this Special Committee on Small Business meeting out of City Hall and into the community to gain new perspectives from residents engaged in the local tech community,” said Councilman Scott Taylor, chair of the committee, in a press release. “We look forward to working with residents and small businesses to assist them to grow their businesses in Kansas City, which will strengthen our neighborhoods.”

The meeting will begin with presentations from the City’s Special Committee on Small Business, the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City’s LaunchKC program and Justine PETERSON, a small business microlender. Following the presentations, owners of local startups will be invited to share the issues, opportunities and possible solutions related to tech entrepreneurship and city government.

The Special Committee on Small Business is a working City Council committee and includes Councilman Scott Taylor (chair), Councilman Scott Wagner (vice chair), Councilman Jermaine Reed and Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo.

  • Small business office hours session on Tuesday, June 25 from 3-5 p.m. at OfficePort. Interested parties can arrange a 30-minute meeting by calling 816-513-2492. The session will be staffed by KCBizCare, the City’s business customer service center; Justine PETERSON; LaunchKC; and the Women’s Business Center. Individuals will be able to directly ask questions related to starting or building a business in Kansas City.
