If you have an interest in ride sharing technology like Uber, the city wants your input into suggested changes to the Safe Ride ordinance, which regulates Transportation Network Companies.
The city says the idea is to improve public safety while encouraging the technology and innovation of the sharing economy and use of smart phone apps to find transportation options.
“We have developed several proposals that will act as a catalyst for the public to provide feedback,” said Jim Ready, Regulated Industries Manager. “We hope residents who have used ride share providers will provide additional input, as well as residents who may not have used these services.”
The original ordinance contained a provision for a review after one year, which is why the city is now asking for input. The changes that have been suggested include: standardized background checks for drivers; requiring insurance to cover any trip with a permitted driver; and tightening regulations around the 30-day temporary driver certificate.
After this one-month public comment period, staff will review comments and a revised ordinance will go to the City Council this fall, followed by additional public hearing.
