City reminds taxpayers of important dates and procedures

The city is reminding residents and business owners of important tax deadlines and updates.

The reminder includes information about online tax filing and where to find forms online, as well as dates when earnings tax, business license fees and extensions requests are due.

Quick Tax: The city now offers an online resource to help make tax filing easier for residents and businesses. Quick Tax is an online system taxpayers may use to file tax returns, make payments, register a business, view and make changes to their accounts with the city and view notices and letters sent by the city. Information about Quick Tax, and other important tax filing information, can be found online at www.kcmo.gov/tax, or by contacting the Revenue Division at 816-513-1120.

Tax forms online: Each year, all city tax forms are updated to insure clarity and to reduce taxpayer error. Using the updated tax forms ensures that taxes are processed efficiently and accurately. The new 2014 and 2015 tax forms are now available online at www.kcmo.gov/taxforms.

Electronic filing: Taxpayers can file and pay for all required city taxes anytime using the  Quick Tax system which is available online at www.kcmo.gov/quicktax. Taxpayers who utilize the Quick Tax system can insure that their tax returns and payments are processed accurately and expeditiously.  With this system taxpayers can also view all tax-related activity on their account including filings, payments and Revenue Division notices.  Utilizing this system also assists the cty in processing tax returns and payments in the most cost-efficient manner available, helping to save taxpayer dollars.For questions regarding the Quick Tax system, taxpayers may contact the Revenue Division’s customer service team at (816) 513-1120, option 1.

Important tax dates

March 2, 2015: Employers Annual Reconciliation of Earnings Tax Withheld & W-2 Records. Information about filing requirements, and penalties for missing the March 2, 2015 deadline can be found online at www.kcmo.gov/tax.The earnings tax generates revenue that pays for a wide variety of basic city services used by all those who live and work in Kansas City, Missouri. In addition to helping fund basic city services such as repairing roads and weekly trash collection, the revenue from the earnings tax also pays for police officers, fire fighters, paramedics and ambulance services. Revenue from the earnings tax also helps fund snow removal, codes inspection, historic preservation and other city needs. The earnings tax generates approximately $220 million dollars annually

March 2, 2015: Deadline for business license applications and payments. Annual business license applications and payments are due by March 2, 2015. Paper forms and online filing options are available at www.kcmo.gov/quicktax. New businesses or existing businesses changing their location, name or legal structure are required to complete a registration application and submit it to the Business License Section at 1118 Oak St., Kansas City, MO 64106 or via fax to 816-513-1264. Taxpayers who have questions about their business license obligations may contact the Revenue Division Business License Section at 816-513-1120 or at www.revenue@kcmo.org.

April 15, 2015: 2014 Wage Earner Earnings Tax and Extensions Deadline and 2014 Calendar Year Profits Earnings Tax and Extensions Deadline. For taxpayers filing extensions, please remember that the City does not accept federal extension forms. Paper forms and online filing options are available at www.kcmo.gov/quicktax.
