City may develop plans for Linwood Boulevard

linwoodLinwood Boulevard may be about to get the type of intensive planning attention that led to the Troost Overlay.

That follows action by the city council planning and zoning committee yesterday. The committee approved a recommendation by Councilman Jim Glover to direct the city manager to create an overlay district for Linwood Boulevard from Southwest Trafficway to Van Brunt.

“Linwood has the capacity to be an east-west connector,” Councilman Jim Glover said.

He wants the city to involve the community in developing guidelines for Linwood similar to those recently developed for Troost Avenue.

“We need to have the citizens drill down on what they want where,” he said.

Linwood was also part of the discussion around parkway and boulevard standards at city hall yesterday. Glover expressed concerns about gas stations on the boulevard. He said he thinks the new boulevard standards, if adopted by the council today, will help, but the overlay process would include more specific goals for redevelopment.

UPDATE July 23, 2015: The full council passed the resolution. In addition, Councilman Glover added a another resolution that the city help create an overlay district for Independence Avenue as well. The council also passed that resolution.
