Charges in Tuesday murder outside Chubby’s

A Kansas City man faces a murder charge for killing a man outside Chubby’s Diner, 3756 Broadway, late Tuesday.

Jeffrey A. Hulett, 37, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Lionel Hernandez, 47. He was arrested at 3839 Baltimore after he called police and said he had shot the victim.

Both the victim and the suspect worked at Chubby’s.

Hulett confessed to the killing, saying the victim “crossed the line,” according to court records.

He said he lured the victim outside by offering to buy him a lottery ticket, according to court records.

“Hulett stated he did not have a physical or verbal altercation with the victim; he just pulled out his gun and shot him point blank,” records state.

Hulett said “he had to kill the victim before the victim killed him,” records state.
