UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton, State Senator Kiki Curls and Police Chief Darryl Forte cut the ribbon for the new Center for Neighborhoods at 4747 Troost on Saturday.

Neighborhood leaders were out in force for the official opening of the new Center for Neighborhoods on Saturday.

State Senator Kiki Curls, who has championed the center, said neighborhood leaders provided input into the type of services they need and helped shape the center.

“I can’t believe after two years we are finally here,” she said.

The UMKC Department of Architecture and Urban Planning developed the center with funding from the state. The idea, according to the center’s website, is to provide “a one-stop location where neighborhood leaders can access the available resources and capacities” of UMKC, including faculty, staff and students. Help from community partners such as Legal Aid of Western Missouri will also be available.

The center will provide access to neighborhood data, offer training, and help neighborhoods build capacity.
