Benton Home remembers artist’s work during WW II

If you’re looking for a unique – and Midtown-centric – way to celebrate Veterans Day, how about a trip to the Thomas Hart Benton Home in Roanoke?

The Benton Home has posted a Facebook item encouraging people to look at paintings Benton produced for the US Navy during WW II.

“He was first commissioned to make a series of drawings depicting the construction of a new LST in Pittsburgh. He next went on the shake-down cruise of the USS Dorado. The resulting oil paintings faithfully show the cramped conditions aboard the new submarine,” according to the post.

The Benton Home State Historic Site is open today. It includes both his home and his studio and paintings.
