Alleged thief named in feathers and cape caper

john-doe-87The man charged with stealing a feathered hat and yellow cape from a downtown costume shop now has a name to go with his criminal charges.

He is Trever Hemen, 19, of East Helena, Mont., according to updated charging papers released today.

He was charged last week with burglary and theft under John Doe because he refused to give his name. Authorities did not say today how they got the name.

According to court records:

Police responded to 2020 Grand at 8:47 p.m. on Thursday on a reported burglary.

A witness told police she was in a bar next door to the costume shop when she saw a man break out a window and run out with a yellow cape. Another witness said the suspect appeared intoxicated and was wearing a yellow cape and a hat with feathers.

The shop owner said such a getup had been stolen and told police it was valued at $7,500.

At 9:52 p.m., police learned that a man wearing said cape and feathers was sitting at the bar next to the costume shop.

They arrested him after a short struggle and he declined to give his name.

His fingerprints did not provide any information, which probably means he has not been arrested before.

At least he has that going for him.
